They manifest in many ways

It is difficult for any of us living in the Western world, on this side of the Enlightenment, to find reality in something like demon possession. We live in the reality of science and medical research. If we see someone exhibiting behaviors that could be understood as demon possession, we chalk it up to a mental illness or perhaps a chemical imbalance. We have even looked back at Holy Scripture and the instances of demon possession in an attempt to explain them away as ancient misunderstanding of other illnesses.

Now, I am not discrediting medical research or science (in fact I think more people of faith need to embrace science), nor am I looking to explain away the witness of ancient Scripture. I believe demon possession is a real thing, even in our Western, post-enlightenment world, because I see it all around us — only now the demons go by different names and exhibit different characteristics. It is my opinion that demon possession exists in ways that most impact and influence the people of a culture.

The demons of our culture manifest themselves in many other ways outside of physical possession. We see the demons of racism, greed and selfishness possessing so many around us. This sort of demon possession goes unchecked and unnoticed by so many, even people of faith. These are the demons we must exorcise in our world today.

Go to God to rid the demons

There is no doubt that this world has both good and evil. God, the Almighty has created us and He wants us to have faith in Him and do the good things. The powers that are working for evil against the commandments of God are mentioned as demons, devils, Satan, etc. These negative forces will effect whenever the Divine effect is removed by disobedience of God’s commandments and committing sins. When God is ignored or disobeyed, evils will take place. In the Holy Quran, mostly demon effects or satanic influence is mentioned when a human being or humanity is suffering or when injustice, oppression and wrong things are being done.

Prophet Job cried to his Lord saying “The devil doth afflict me with distress and torment” (Quran 38:41) Taking usury or interest has been forbidden by God both in the Bible and in the Quran. High interest rates have been one of the main reasons for the downfall of our economy. Holy Quran mentions taking usury as one of the effects of Satan. “Those who swallow usury cannot rise up save as he arises whom the devil hath prostrated by (his) touch.” (Quran 2:275)

In a situation like that, the treatment is going back to God and remembering Him. “Those who are God conscious, when a thought of evil from Satan assaults them, they bring God to remembrance” (Quran 7:201)
