The family of a Wadley man are preparing for his funeral Wednesday, after his wife struck him with a car Thursday in what police describe as an accident.

Anniston police Capt. Allen George told The Star today Joaquin Allende, 68, died after his wife struck him with their Honda Accord as she was backing it out of an Anniston trailer park on the 1600 block of Golden Springs Road. George said police on Thursday determined the death was an accident.

George said that when Hilaria hit Joaquin with the car, Hilaria panicked and stepped on the gas pedal instead of the brake. George said the Allendes’ 26-year-old daughter called police because Hilaria doesn’t speak English.

When Anniston police, Anniston EMS and the Anniston Fire Department arrived at the scene Joaquin was still under the car, George said. Firefighters used airbags to lift the vehicle off Joaquin’s body and EMS checked him for signs of life, the captain said.

Joaquin was pronounced dead on the scene Thursday and taken to the county coroner, the captain said.

Visitation hours for Joaquin Allende will be Wednesday from 4-5 p.m. at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Roanoke with the funeral to immediately follow.
