A man was recovering this morning at a local hospital after he was shot during a robbery at his Anniston convenience store.

Anniston police Capt. Allen George said a 38-year-old man was shot in the torso around midnight at his store, Black’s Grocery and More, on the 700 block of West 15th Street.

George said three suspects went to the business and told the store owner he was being robbed. One suspect was armed with a handgun, the captain said, but the victim couldn’t determine the caliber of the gun.

George said the store owner got into a scuffle with the suspects, and one of them fired the gun, hitting the victim.

The victim fled the store and drove to his nearby home, George said, where he fell on the floor and told his mother he’d been shot.

The victim was taken to Regional Medical Center and had surgery early this morning, George said. The store owner was in stable condition in the Intensive Care Unit this morning, according to the captain.

The suspects fled before police arrived at the store, George said. The victim told police he was uncertain what the suspects stole from the business.

There was another man in the store, George said, who was able to flee before shots were fired. Police were interviewing witnesses today in hopes of identifying the suspects, he said.

Any suspect could face charges of first-degree robbery and first-degree assault, both felonies.
