Police say a man discovered a 2-year-old boy walking alone on Eighth Street in Anniston Thursday morning.

Anniston police Capt. Allen George said a man driving a truck to make a delivery at Regional Medical Center stopped when he saw the toddler in the middle of the road. George said the child is believed to have been wandering alone between 5:55 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. The man took the toddler to RMC’s emergency room and called police, George said.

Officers searched the neighborhood looking for houses with front doors left open, George said, but found nothing.

The captain said officers called workers with the Calhoun County Department of Human Resources, who took custody of the boy.

Police later spoke to the child’s mother, who told officers she left the boy with her sleeping roommate.

George said this morning that the child was not injured and the incident was still under investigation.
