Pleasant Valley star adds weight, cuts down injuries

PLEASANT VALLEY — When thinking about football players who have bulked up during the off-season, linemen and linebackers are the usual suspects. Pleasant Valley’s junior running back Drew Lewiski is the one of the exceptions.

“He’s probably put on around 15 to 20 pounds of mass,” Raiders head coach Jeff Davis said.

According to Davis, Lewiski weighed close to 150 pounds in 2012. He now weighs 170 pounds.

“It’s mass and not fat,” Davis said. “He’s tightly wound.”

As a running back, Lewiski is dependent on his agility and ability to outmaneuver opposing players. Adding 20 pounds seems counterproductive — but it isn’t for Lewiski, who rushed for 122 yards and scored four touchdowns last week against Ranburne.

“For me, it’s about not getting hurt,” Lewiski said.

On Sept. 7, 2012, Lewiski suffered a broken shoulder in a game against Ranburne. The injury caused him to miss the rest of the season.

With his sophomore season over early, Lewiski began the dreaded recovery and rehab process. He referred to the process as “long” but feels that it made him stronger in the end. He noted that the tedious task of stacking cups on top of a shelf helped him the most.

“I think when he got hurt last year, it really messed with his mind a little bit,” Davis said. “I think he really stepped it up for the six months after rehab was over with and really pushed himself in the weight room. He got strong and was determined not to let an injury keep him out again this year.”

Although he is carrying more weight, Lewiski believes his speed has actually improved.

Then again, he has been training his body to carry extra weight all off-season. Part of Davis’ running program required him to run sprints while pulling a sled that was holding weights.

“It starts with just running without a lot of weight,” said Lewiski. “Then we start throwing some heavy weight on there, trying to work on our striding.”

That work was not enough for him. Lewiski continued his work at home.

“I did some stuff at home with some dummies working on first steps and working on getting out of the box low, working your knees up,” he said.

Davis went so far as to say that Lewiski is “pound for pound the strongest kid on our team.”

“We do an index on power cleans, squats and bench press,” said Davis. “His index is almost a six which is almost unheard of. It means on those three lifts, he’s doing six times his body weight.”

After an off-season filled with more obstacles than most, Lewiski is back on the gridiron where he belongs. He is free to move on to his next goal.

“Playoffs,” Lewiski said. “We want to make a run.”
