OXFORD - A familiar face at Oxford schools has been hired as principal of Coldwater Elementary.

The Oxford City School Board voted unanimously at a Tuesday meeting to hire Michael Maniscalco for the position. Maniscalco is replacing Kenneth Gover, who retired as principal of Coldwater this year.

Maniscalco has worked for the district for 15 years, beginning as a physical education teacher at Oxford Elementary in 1998. He was later hired as the school’s assistant principal, a position he kept for six years before moving to Coldwater in 2010 as assistant principal.

“I plan to continue what Mr. Gover got started at Coldwater, and the foundation that he laid,” Maniscalco said. “We have outstanding teachers and support staff at Coldwater.”

Maniscalco credited the school’s family-like atmosphere, and said his first concern is for the success of Coldwater students.

A 1993 graduate of Oxford High School, Maniscalco received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Jacksonville State University.

As Coldwater teachers prepare to welcome Maniscalco to his new position, teachers at Oxford Middle and High schools are preparing for their students to receive one of the approximately 3,000 Macbook laptops the district will begin handing out in August. Of those laptops, 2,000 are newly purchased.

Students at those schools will be issued laptops as part of the district’s one-to-one computer initiative, called “Connect.”

Eric Burrage, director of operations for the Oxford school system, said district employees are working to prepare the 2,000 new laptops for deployment “Day and night, right now. We started working a second shift to try to get them done.”

About 500 of those laptops are ready, complete with engravings of Oxford school’s logo on the cover of each one.

Additional wireless Internet access points have been added to classrooms at both the high school and middle school, Burrage said.

In other business, the school board:

— Tabled consideration of a consolidation and revision of policies that govern technology use for the district’s students and staff.

— Approved the 2013-14 student handbook for C.E. Hannah School.

— Approved the 2013-14 Code of Student Conduct.

— Approved an amended budget for the 2012-13 school year.

— Announced the community will have a chance to meet the district’s two new principals – Chris Cox at Oxford High and Maniscalco at Coldwater — on Aug. 4 from 2-4 p.m. at the Oxford Civic Center.

— Announced the district received a certificate of achievement for the district’s transportation system from the Alabama Department of Education. The district’s bus system received less than 10 percent deficiency after an inspection by the State Department of Education.
