Samuel Garner hopes for a college scholarship, but he isn’t aiming for one in football.

The Donoho junior said when he isn't playing football or golf for the Falcons, he focuses on academics, maintaining a solid 3.7 grade point average. His dream school is Emory University in Atlanta, but he wouldn’t be upset staying in state and attending Alabama. Garner said he eventually wants to become a heart doctor.

Garner has played football since eighth grade, and since joining the team, he has played three different positions — wide receiver, defensive end and inside linebacker. Garner said of the three, he prefers where he is now — linebacker. He added he prefers defense over offense.

Recently, Garner stayed in the locker room for the first few minutes of practice to sit down with Anniston Star sports writer Brandon Miller and sack 10 questions:

Question: What’s the best thing about this year’s Donoho team?

Answer: I guess it’s the level of the commitment. We know we have a good skillset and a lot of good players, but it’s working to improve on that.

Q: What makes football your favorite sport?

A: I like the connection you have with your teammates and everything. I really enjoy working together to get better as a team.

Q: Is Donoho going to make the playoffs?

A: I think we will. We’ve made a lot of advancements. Every game has been an improvement so far. We started off with a loss against Valley Head, and we just wondered where we’d go from there. We’ve moved forward and improved everything.

Q: What’s been your favorite game this season?

A: I had a really fun game against JCA because I had a lot of tackles, but Collinsville was the most fun because it was a big win. Collinsville is probably the toughest team on our schedule, but we don’t know that because we haven’t played everyone. But they were the best team last year other than Cedar Bluff.

Q: What’s your favorite vacation spot?

A: I love going down to Destin. My family and I have always gone down there since I was really little. We have a house down there.

Q: Who is your favorite professional athlete?

A: I like Julio Jones a lot just because I’m a big Alabama fan and I love the Falcons. It’s easy to enough to be a really successful college player, but it’s hard to take it to the next level. There are a lot of players like Tim Tebow that were great in college but couldn’t take it to the next level. Julio has done that pretty well so far.

Q: Who is the last person you called?

A: I called my dad just a few minutes ago to try to get some spare car keys. I can’t find mine right now. They fell off my keychain. I had to ride with my friend down to the gym because my spare keys are at my house.

Q: What’s your favorite social media site?

A: I like Instagram and Twitter, but Twitter is my favorite. I like catching up on stuff, a lot of different stuff. It’s a good place to get news.

Q: You wear No. 52 for a practice jersey, but why do you wear jersey No. 6 for games?

A: I just didn’t want to be No. 52 or anything like that. I wanted a low number. I’ve been No. 6 since 10th grade and was 76 when I was younger.

Q: Do you have any pregame traditions?

A: I always try to wear black underwear before games, briefs not boxers. That’s my good-luck charm.
