A 29-year-old man told police he was assaulted by a man Friday evening after the man asked for a cigarette.

Anniston police Sgt. Chris Sparks said the victim was walking near the intersection of West 14th Street and Brown Avenue Friday around 7 p.m.

According to Sparks, the victim told police a man he didn’t know approached him, asked for a cigarette and then pulled out a sharp object and cut the victim on the lip.

The victim fled on foot to a nearby friend’s house, Sparks said, and was taken to Regional Medical Center. The victim received treatment for injuries he is expected to recover from, according to the sergeant.

Sparks said today police had no suspects and were still investigating the incident.

Any suspect could be charged with second-degree assault, a felony, according to a police report.
