Jay Dee Rowe, 19, of Anniston, was charged with domestic violence by strangulation, a felony.
Anniston police Capt. Allen George said Rowe’s 20-year-old girlfriend told officers the two had an argument at their apartment on the 4600 block of Sprague Avenue. The incident occurred around 9 p.m., according to a police report.
George said the woman told Rowe she was going to leave and he pushed her. Rowe threatened to kill the woman if she called police, George said.
The victim called a family member to pick her up, but before the person arrived, Rowe threatened his girlfriend with a pistol and strangled her, the captain said.
Shortly after, police arrived and observed red marks and scratches on the woman’s neck, George said. The victim refused medical treatment, he said.
Rowe refused to talk to police about the incident, George said, and instead told officers to take him to jail. The man denied having a gun, but police discovered a pistol under a couch cushion, he said.
“We seized the firearm for safekeeping,” George said.
Rowe was arrested on scene and was in the Anniston City Jail this morning. Bond is set at $8,000. A court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 30.
