A 23-year-old man was charged Wednesday with sexually abusing a 4-year-old Anniston girl earlier this week, Anniston police said.

The Anniston man was charged with first-degree sodomy after he allegedly had inappropriate contact with the girl Monday between 2:30 a.m. and 7 a.m., Sgt. Chris Sparks said.

Sparks said the victim’s mother reported to police Monday morning that her daughter was abused by a man at her home on the 1600 block of Coleman Road.

The mother told police she was acquainted with the suspect, Sparks said.

According to the sergeant, the child was interviewed by the Calhoun-Cleburne Children’s Center, and the Department of Human Resources was also involved in the investigation. Police were able to find the man and determine a crime was committed.

The man was in the Anniston City Jail Thursday and a $20,000 cash bond was set. A court date is scheduled for April 15.

The Star typically withholds the identities of those charged with sex crimes unless they are convicted or plead guilty, because the stigma associated with such charges can linger even if the charges are dropped or the suspect is exonerated.
