A man was charged early this morning with assaulting an Anniston police officer on Noble Street.

A patrol officer found Brandon Robert Winningham, 22, of Anniston, lying in the road at the 1,000 block of Noble Street at 2:45 this morning, according to Anniston Sgt. Chris Sparks.

The officer stopped to check on Winningham and discovered the man was intoxicated, Sparks said. While the officer tried to provide assistance, Winningham assaulted him, the sergeant said.

Sparks would not release the condition of the officer or details of the assault.

Winningham was charged with second-degree assault, a felony, as well as resisting arrest and public intoxication, both misdemeanors, according to a police report.

Sparks said the incident is still under investigation.

Winningham was in the Anniston City Jail this morning, Sparks said. Bond and a court date had not been set by this morning.
