JACKSONVILLE — Ten of Jacksonville State’s 15 athletics programs posted team grade point averages of 3.0 or better, nudging the entire athletics department over the 3.0 plateau for the second year a row.

The Gamecocks’ spring semester GPA dipped below 3.0, but a strong fall allowed them to enjoy a 3.003 mark for the academic year, the school announced Saturday. A year ago, JSU athletes posted an all-time high GPA of 3.01 for the academic year.

A total of 134 players posted GPAs of 3.0 or better during the academic year. Senior baseball pitcher Robby Lilly became the first JSU male athlete to receive the Dr. Clarence William Daugette Award that goes to the male graduate with the highest GPA of the graduating class.

Lilly, an academic All-America candidate, graduated summa cum laude with special honors in accounting with a 4.0 GPA.

Softball led all JSU sports with a 3.668 team GPA, edging volleyball by .004 points. Women’s teams held down the top three and five of the top six spots on the academic year list. The school did not provide the spring semester GPAs.

The Gamecocks’ three highest profile sports — football (2.754), men’s basketball (2.69) and women’s basketball (2.31) — pulled down the bottom three spots.

The school is expected to receive more positive academic news later this summer when the NCAA releases its annual APR report for all member schools. While they have declined to comment specifically on the Gamecocks’ APR scores, school officials have expressed confidence in a positive report.
