The Gamecocks have received commitments from two in-state inside linebackers – Quan Stoudamire of Opp and Austin Mansell of Walker.
Stoudamire, who is 6-foot-1 and 235 pounds, has been a consistent three-year starter and is Opp’s leading tackler this season. Kentucky, Middle Tennessee and Appalachian State have shown interest in Stoudamire, who is the cousin of four-star prospect Denzel Ware. Stoudamire was impressed with the Gamecocks’ commitment to him.
He also liked the Gamecocks’ aggressive style of defense.
“They have been recruiting me since the beginning of the season and gave me my first offer,” Stoudamire said. “The coaches called almost every day and showed a lot of interest. That was the biggest part of it.”
Mansell, who is 6-1 and 230, ultimately may become the steal of the class. He has gone virtually unnoticed despite a solid junior year and averaging 10 tackles a game this season, but Auburn is said to be looking at him and he just got offered by Air Force on Tuesday. Still, his father, Walker interim head coach Scott Mansell, called his son’s commitment to JSU “firm.”
“I am pretty firm committing on Jacksonville State,” Austin Mansell said. “There’s not any other school that would change my mind unless some huge SEC school … came along. I just loved the whole coaching staff as a unit and the direction they’re going. I believe in everything they believe in.”
