JACKSONVILLE — The hits just keep coming for Bill Clark’s first Jacksonville State recruiting class.

Connor Rouleau, a top-25 rated kicker from Suwanee, Ga., committed to JSU on Friday and said he will sign with the Gamecocks at his high school on Tuesday.

He will complete a signing class that features five two- and three-star prospects and will include at least one player from each position group.

“The thing for me is I wanted to go play college football,” Rouleau said Sunday. “If it was going to be junior college for a year and then transfer, it was still going to be college football.”

Rouleau had a lot of interest, but mostly walk-on opportunities. Nevada, William & Mary, Samford, Charlotte and Memphis all were in the conversation. Eastern Kentucky offered a half-scholarship.

He actually was headed to Georgia Military, but Jacksonville State called the morning of signing day with the best offer.

“The night before I was training with (renowned kicking coach) Mike McCabe and he told me they (JSU) needed film in 30 minutes,” Rouleau said. “I stayed up real late making them a highlight film.”

The plan is for Rouleau to kick and be an emergency punter. He was 7 of 11 on field goals this past season for Peachtree Ridge (with a long of 47), 22 for 22 on extra points, and nearly 75 percent of his kickoffs went for touchbacks. He averaged 36.4 yards a punt.

Twice in his career he has kicked in the Georgia Dome, where the Gamecocks are scheduled to play Georgia State this coming season.

He had a 64-yard punt in the fall, breaking the school record previously held by current Pittsburgh Steelers punter Drew Butler. He was rated No. 23 on ESPN's list of top 100 kickers.
