Hobson City’s town clerk is set for arraignment Dec. 19, indicted by a Calhoun County grand jury with stealing money from the town.

The grand jury in October indicted Shelia Jones, 38, of Anniston on a charge of theft of property, a felony.

Jones turned herself in to Calhoun County sheriff’s deputies Nov. 10, and was released on a $10,000 bond that same day.

According to the grand jury indictment, Jones stole between $500 and $2,500 from Hobson City sometime between Feb. 1 and Aug. 2.

Calhoun County District Judge Chris McIntyre on Oct. 15 granted prosecutors’ requests to dismiss two misdemeanor charges against Jones. Jones turned herself in to Calhoun County sheriff’s deputies Aug. 7 after being charged with tampering with government records and obstructing government operations. She had been on unpaid leave since her arrest.

Hobson City Mayor Alberta McCrory said that Jones used her position as clerk to avoid paying garnishments of her own wages.

“We had a court order from the court, and she’s the payroll clerk. She was responsible for deducting the money out of her paycheck,” McCrory said.

Jones began deducting the money from her paycheck but then stopped, McCrory said.

Jones’s wages were ordered garnished to pay a $4,500 judgment in a 2008 lawsuit filed by a landlord for unpaid rent, court records show. The town government was issued notice of the garnishment order in January 2013, according to court records.

Jones’ arraignment is set for 9 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 19 at the Calhoun County Courthouse.
