Farming is an integral part of Alabama's history and economy. But its farmers markets don't measure up to the best America offers.

That opinion comes courtesy of, which ranked the 101 top farmers markets. None are in Alabama, much less in Calhoun County. The top one is in Seattle. The list likes markets in Las Vegas, Homer, Alaska, and Milwaukie, Ore. (yes, that's spelled correctly), but it didn't like any from good ol' Alabama, even though it mentions our state in its narrative.

Nevertheless, the website's rankings provide an interesting take on fresh food. It writes, "As more farmland is bulldozed and lost to urbanization, though, farmers’ markets are threatened, and we are at risk of losing our fresh, locally sourced food if local farmers can’t financially support their farms. ...

"Farmers’ markets are a place where the community comes together to support each other and the sustainable practices farmers use to produce. Farmers are the backbones of our food supply, and we love meeting and getting to know the people who grow what we eat at our local farmers’ market."
