The explosion last week in West, Texas.
The explosion last week in West, Texas.
The twin, but unrelated, events last week in Boston and West, Texas, are worthy of a brief comparison.

Four people died -- three from the bombs, one by gunfire -- when two brothers blew up two bombs at the Boston Marathon and later shot a policeman. But in West, Texas, an explosion at a fertilizer plant killed many more and nearly leveled an entire town.

With that in mind, the blogosphere has been filled with reports that show how more prevalent industrial disasters are than terrorist attacks in the United States. This one by the Institute for Southern Studies is quite good. It shows how slippery a slope it is in America because of lax regulations, lobbyists and politicians who represent the nation's industrial regions.

As we worry about making our country safe from terrorists, we should also worry about preventing more accidents such as the one in West, Texas. Those incidents are just as deadly.
