Joan McLeod Lovvorn of Woodland recently established a United Daughters of the Confederacy scholarship at The University of Alabama to honor her father. It is named the William Posey McLeod Memorial scholarship. Martha Smith Wilkinson, 2012-2014 Alabama UDC second vice-president, accepted the new scholarship on behalf of the Alabama Division UDC.

Mr. McLeod was a lifelong resident of Ranburne where he was born March 22, 1922. He served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II in Italy and South Africa. As a grandson of Neal McLeod of Randolph County who served in the Confederate Army, McLeod received a UDC World War II Cross of Military Service presented by the Major General Patrick R. Cleburne Chapter in 2012. He passed away April 3, 2013.
