A called meeting by the Calhoun County Board of Education Tuesday ended with the hiring of a new assistant principal for Wellborn Elementary School.

Susan Maxwell, former math and science teacher at White Plains High School, will take over the vacancy left by Jeanna Chandler, who was recently named Wellborn Elementary’s principal.

Maxwell’s hire was approved by the board unanimously.

“She’s a strong academic teacher as well as a positive, enriching role model,” superintendent Joe Dyar said. “She really cares about kids.”

Chandler says she thinks the board’s choice was a good one for the school.

“She has good energy and is motivated and efficient. I think she will do a good job and will bring a lot to the table,” she said.

Six other positions are still open, according to the board website. The board is still looking for a librarian for Wellborn Elementary School, a business education teacher for Weaver High School, a science teacher for Alexandria High School, a math teacher for White Plains High School, and a physical education teacher for Pleasant Valley High School.

Dyar said the board has eight or nine applicants lined up for the positions and will hold another called meeting Aug. 26 to decide who will take over. The next regular board meeting will be Aug. 22.

In other business, the board:

· Awarded bids to supply county schools with a tilt kettle and a mixer-cutter, equipment used in cafeteria kitchens. Bids were awarded to Bresco Restaurant Equipment and Supplies for both the tilt kettle ($7,398) and the mixer-cutter ($11,797).

· Allowed three Saks High School students to speak during the open comments portion of the meeting where they consoled the superintendent on the recent passing of his mother, thanked him for his services, and asked board members to start attending their volleyball matches.
