Baseball gets extremely exciting when tempers flare, despite normally being a slow, sometimes boring sport. And when Diamondbacks pitcher Ian Kennedy intentionally beamed Dodgers pitcher Zach Grienke in the shoulder with a fastball, someone might as well have rang a bell.
And it wasn’t just players getting into it. There were former players Don Mattingly, Mark McGuire, Turner Ward and others, which wanted in on the action. And they are coaches.
But what makes these typically pointless scuffles special is they occur because teammates are standing up for a fellow player. Is it right? No. But it’s team unity. It’s having everyone’s back and everyone having yours.
It’s rare that anyone gets seriously hurt, so if grown men want to act like pre-teens and fight over getting hit with a baseball, who’s to stop them? As fans, we should just have popcorn ready and an cold Pepsi to help enjoy the action.
