Anniston police were investigating Thursday a case of sexual abuse that reportedly occurred in the late 1990s.

Anniston Capt. Allen George said a 20-year-old girl told police Tuesday she was abused by her stepfather from 1996 until 1998. The woman was 3 years old when the abuse began, George said.

The victim was touched inappropriately by the man at a home on the 3100 block of Morrisville Road, according to a police report.

George said the woman no longer lives with her abuser.

Alabama does not have a statute of limitations on cases involving the sexual abuse of a child.

A suspect could be charged with first-degree sexual abuse, a felony, according to a police report.
