airliner from Chicago landed at one minute past midnight.

1961 Cuban leader Fidel Castro declared himself a Marxist-Leninist who would eventually lead Cuba to Communism.

In The Star

Dec. 2, 1938, in The Star: Live musical programs with an audience are part of the broadcast schedule of WHMA radio; one such act is known as “Uncle Ernie and his Radio Ranch Boys,” who perform on Saturday afternoons from 1:30 until 3. Doors to the auditorium in the radio station building at 14th and Noble Street open at 1. Also this date: Daugette and Mullican, a Jacksonville construction company, yesterday afternoon was awarded the contract to construct an $80,000 library building at the State Teachers College. Bids were opened in the office of Dr. A.H. Collins, state superintendent of education, in Montgomery. Additionally: A classified ad alerts the reader to “Pop’s Barbecue,” owned by W. G. “Pop” Pearson, doing business at 622 Leighton Avenue (rear).

Dec. 2, 1988, in The Star: Somewhat making up for its humbling loss to Auburn, the Crimson Tide last night enjoyed an immensely satisfying 30-10 victory against Texas A&M in Texas. Given substandard facilities in which to practice and dress at College Station, Alabama’s players showed it’s the final score that counts in a game postponed from Sept. 17 on account of then-Hurricane Gilbert. Coach Bill Curry caught quite a bit of flak when he pulled out of that date based on the perceived — but never-realized — threat posed by Gilbert. The Tide has now chalked up an 8-3 regular season record.
