This week the Jacksonville Board of Education selected McKee and Associates Architecture and Interior Design to work on a school construction project.

Superintendent Jon Paul Campbell said the board selected the firm from among four that were seeking the job. A firm with offices in several Alabama cities, McKee and Associates specializes in school construction, he noted.

“That was a real selling point,” Campbell said.

The board will have an opportunity to vote on the contract with the firm once a final version is drawn up, Campbell said.

Though the board has selected an architect, it has not selected a site to build it, Campbell said. The board will also need the firm to help it determine whether it can afford to construct both an elementary school and a middle school, he said.

The firm is expected to present several plans to the school officials for review. Campbell said he expects some plans to feature a combined campus and others to depict individual schools.

Since announcing the project, officials have said it’s necessary to have a new elementary school building, noting Kitty Stone Elementary School faces mandatory updates.

Currently students in the traditional middle school grades are split between the elementary and high schools, with sixth-graders attending Kitty Stone Elementary and seventh- and eighth-graders attending Jacksonville High School.

Campbell said the board will now receive regular updates about the progress of the plans.
