Bama Boggin’ Mud Park opened in Heflin in March in 30-degree weather and still drew 300 to 400 people, according to the owners. Each weekend the park has hosted an event, the crowds have gotten larger, they say.

While people along Pelham Road took pictures and video, a horse-drawn hearse filled with flowers slowly made its way down Pelham Road and then to the historic cemetery in Jacksonville on Sunday. Behind the hearse, ancestors of the pallbearers and relatives of Maj. John Pelham, along with re-enactors in period dress and a few dozen area residents, recreated the funeral procession of a Confederate hero of the Civil War.

Managing the Talladega National Forest is a massive undertaking. Federal budget cuts may make it even harder. The federal budget cuts known as sequestration, which could take effect March 1 if Congress doesn’t act to stop them, would include a cut of about $2 billion to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. That could filter down to the U.S. Forest Service in the form of a $134 million cut to the Wildland Fire Management Program and a $78 million cut to the National Forest System
