12-20-2007

Local optometrist Dr. Duane Mohon, O.D. was named Young Optometrist of the Year by the Alabama Optometric Association (ALOA).
The award was presented during the Association’s 2007 Convention, held November 2-4, at the Wynfrey Hotel in Birmingham.
Dr. Mohon is a graduate of Auburn University where he received his undergraduate Bachelor of Science degree. He received his doctorate from The Eye Institute of Nova Southeastern University in 1998 and is currently practicing full scope, primary care, and low vision optometry at EyeCare Alabama, In., a two office setting in Piedmont and Heflin.
Dr. Mohon is an active member of the American Optometric Association as well as the Alabama Optometric Association, where he was just elected to the Board of Directors in 2007. He is a past chairperson of the ALOA Membership Committee as well as the Third Party Committee.
As an active community leader, Dr. Mohon volunteers for the Cleburne County school system as well as the Piedmont City school system, performing free annual vision screenings for the entire first, third and fifth grades of Cleburne County and Piedmont City.
Dr. Mohon resides in Jacksonville, with his wife Sharon Ann Aultman Mohon and their three children Megan (8), Mason (6), and McClane (18 months).
The Young Optometrist of the Year award is presented to a qualified Alabama Doctor of Optometry in recognition of outstanding service to the Alabama Optometric Association; to the profession of Optometry, on behalf of the visual welfare of the public; and/or to their community.

The Alabama Optometric Association is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the eye health and vision care of Alabamians through the practice of optometry. Its membership includes more than 400 optometrists from across the state.
