Trent Penny, the chief photographer, has worked at The Star for almost 21 years. Penny lives in Jacksonville with his wife and two children. Penny's favorite photo for the year is of Pearl Williams comforting her son, Kim, after he sang at a ceremony recognizing his brother, Dwayne, who was killed in the Sept. 11 attack on the Pentagon. Qualls favorite photo of the year is Joe Burns at a YMCA swimming class because of his energy and zest for life. When capturing Joe's character, it was easy as taking the lens cap off the camera.

Gross' favorite photo for the year is the cover shot of the children spraying each other with water. The day he shot it, it was extremely hot and he'd driven around for about an hour desperately searching for a good feature photo when he came across these children in western Anniston.
Bill Wilson is in his 16th year at The Star. Wilson lives in Anniston with his wife and son.
