Forestry reps speak to ALFA members
04-21-2008
Local state forestry representatives Paul Williams, County Forester; state biologist Ryan Prince and Alabama Conservation Department Game Warden Scott Laminack recently spoke to a meeting of the Alabama Farmers Federation in Heflin. Jimmy Jimmerson introduced the forestry and wildlife program. Laminack said his department is still gathering buck harvest data as well as harvest data on turkeys. He said deer hunting with dogs is a hot topic right now and the conservation advisory board will be taking a look at it. He speculated that if that type of hunting is approved it will be by permit in all counties. Laminack noted that there has been an ongoing conflict between hunters and landowners in Cleburne County regarding the dog-deer hunting and it has never been allowed here. A show of hands in the local meeting indicated majority of those present in opposition also. Laminack also urged support for HB 677 which will increase fines for hunting on private property, night hunting and hunting without a license. Questioned about hunting wild hogs and coyotes, Laminack said there is a year-round open season for them but noted you cannot hunt them at night. Prince explained his job in assisting private landowners with management of their properties regarding game and non-game animals. He said more land owners are becoming interested in backyard habitats for song birds. Prince talked briefly about invasive species such as wild hogs, kudzu, and Japanese privets. Asked about declining quail populations, Prince attributed it to habitat loss.Williams said part of his job is helping residents manage their forest land with prescribed burns, thinning, fire breaks and establishment of Treasure Forests.
