The 2008 4-H Midwinter Teen Leadership Retreat was held at the Alabama 4-H Youth Development Center in Columbiana during the weekend of February 15-17. This year’s event celebrated the times and themes of the 1980’s. 4-H Teen Club youth, Dale Cordel, Jonathan Fordham, and Chelsea Boyd were among the one hundred thirty-one youth from thirty-five counties who participated in leadership activities developed and led by 4-H youth, Collegiate 4-H, Alabama Cooperative Extension personnel, and Alabama 4-H supporters. Youth attended workshops on energy education, teambuilding, the global war on hunger, financial management, and communication skills. Mrs. Roy Boyd of Fruithurst, attended as a volunteer leader. (Pictured above bottom left) One of the highlights of the weekend’s activities was the dance Saturday evening. Youth brought down the house with their performance of Michael Jackson’s Thriller. Natasha Marable, a volunteer from Randolph County, taught youth the steps to the dance. As a community service project, youth collected over one-hundred pounds of canned goods for a local food bank and collected nineteen cents, what is the cost to feed one child per day in a developing country, for entry into the dance. All proceeds will go to The United Nations World Food Program, one of the world’s largest humanitarian agencies, which selected Auburn University to establish the worldwide model as a student-led program to increase awareness of global hunger and poverty.
