Mission/thirft store opens in Heflin
06-25-2007
David's House, a thrift store program of Cane Creek Mission has opened in Heflin at the corner of Ross and Bell streets. According to mission founders Gerald and Gail Armstrong, their goals for the store is to provide a food pantry, offer clothing and household items for sale to low income individuals and to those who love to shop thrift stores and provide help in emergency situations. "There is a lot of needs in our area and we have just about exhausted our own finances. We purchased the home (in which the store is located) about three months ago and we have some construction to do in the back," Gail said. The home now has two bedrooms which are being fixed up for an individual or family who might need emergency shelter. They have a kitchen/food pantry which can serve the two bedrooms as well as a community food pantry for the needy. Another food outreach will be assisting in stocking Gail explained. The three front rooms of the home will serve as a thrift store and office.. Gerald said he hopes the store will serve as a community place for churches - a central location to come together and help those in need. We need volunteer workers, financial help, supplies and contributions. We want this to be an ice-breaker between the churches, something to help the community. And we also want to work with HEARTS. This is not a competition thing. We respect what they are doing and we want to work with them and they with us on a like minded effort." The store will be open Mon - Fri. from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Those wishing to contribute or needing help can call 256-463-2602 or email canecreekmission@aol.com.
